Well this past Saturday was the second time I was able to use the snowblower on about 5" of wet snow and the gearbox blew again!! I doubt it had a full hour use. JD dealer says the warranty on the replacement part is only 90 days. I have lost faith in JD now and am considering my options, maybe a Berco unit. The snow blower surgery involves a bit of surgical preparation to close off a 1/3 of the impeller housing opening with a steel plate drilled with several holes to mount to the cross auger housing. 1. wash out snow blower with hot water to get rid of all the grit and salt. 2. Remove both cross augers so you have room to work Cast Iron is always the way to go. Awhile back alluminum was used on the ariens snow blowers as a cost cutting move, and they had problems. Now they make a big deal about the cast iron gear case. It's a durability issue. If Alluminum was better that is what they would use. Even the compact Ariens use cast iron now.
